VB Book Club: Alexandra Wilkis Wilson

March 14, 2018

We're taking some extra time this month to celebrate the women who inspire us and asked Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, co-founder of Gilt, GLAMSQUAD and Fitz (yeah, she's a big deal) to share her must-read books for career and life advice. Get to know her below and check out her list. Happy reading!

First thing you do every morning?
I look at the clock to check what time it is, to see if I can go back to sleep. I'm an early riser.

Who do you look up to?
Mindy Grossman, CEO of Weight Watchers. She is my friend, mentor and is a champion of women.

What motivates you?

I am pretty self-motivated, but I also get inspired by meeting diverse people and wanting to understand their perspectives on life.

Own It: The Power of Women at Work

by Sallie Krawcheck

"This book is a modern day take on how in a fast- changing business world driven by the pace of rapidly evolving technology and consumer demands, women can effectively lead."

Delivering Happiness

by Tony Hsieh

"This book is not only inspiring for entrepreneurs, but it highlights the importance of a basic principle that seems so obvious, and yet few brands do it as well as Zappos. Tony stresses the importance of customer service being core to Zappos' culture and operational ethos. I learned from reading this book and often refer to Zappos' best practices in customer service."

Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead

by Sheryl Sandberg

"Women in business, especially in the startup and tech worlds, need to be able to partake in the "lean in" conversation and should have a point of view."

Influence: Science and Practice

by Robert Cialdini

"I found many nuggets of value in this book which examines the psychology of compliance. It helps uncover which factors might cause a person to say yes to another's request. Having a better understanding this psychology can help entrepreneurs and startup make more effective business decisions."

By Invitation Only: How We Built Gilt and Changed the Way Millions Shop

by Alexis Maybank and Alexandra Wilkis Wilson

"I can't help a shameless plug on the book that Alexis and I wrote together to share our experiences in building Gilt and disrupting the fashion industry 10 years ago. We share tips for aspiring entrepreneurs, marketers and fast-growing companies. We teach people how to think outside the box and prioritize what matters in business and in one's own personal life."
