VBGetaway: San Antonio, TX

August 12, 2015

San Antonio is one of my favorite places to visit. It is a city rich in history and culture. The Tejanos people (Indians) were originally Mexican and stayed there when their land became Texas. The San Antonio River runs through the town. Here is my list of places to explore!

EAT

TexMex was born out of traditional Mexican flavors mixed with the spices and sauces of the Texas barbecue. You can take a little bit of the TexMex flavor home with you and pick up some hot sauce during your trip.
For the best TexMex guacamole head to Boudros Restaurant—they make it right at your table. Be sure you also order the Prickly Pear Margarita!

Here’s what you need to make the guacamole at home:
Juice of ¼ orange, juice of ½ lime, 1 avocado, 2 tablespoons roasted and charred diced Roma tomatoes, 1 seeded and diced roasted Serrano pepper, 1 tablespoon diced red onion, 1 teaspoon chopped cilantro, and sea salt to taste. Squeeze juices into a bowl and add in coarsely chopped avocado. Fold in the rest of the ingredients. The result should be chopped, not mashed.

SEE & EXPLORE

The Alamo
The Battle of the Alamo was a 13 day siege at a mission in San Antonio that was fought in February 1836 by Mexican forces against a handful of American rebels fighting for Texan independence from Mexico. I was able to learn so much more about this important piece of American history during my tour.

Natural Bridge Caverns
Get ready for a lot of stelactites and stalagmites! Pack a chic raincoat for exploring the caves – it can be drippy down there!

San Antonio River Walk
Explore the San Antonio River along the river walk paths that are one story under the streets of downtown San Antonio. The pathways are dotted with hotels, restaurants and bars.
