It's a Rad, Rad WorldMeet Skateboarder Sierra Prescott
How did you get into skateboarding?
In the late Nineties, the media started to catch wind of skating. I was into playing video games and watching cartoons and simultaneously fell in love with Rocket Power (Nickelodeon) and Tony Hawks Pro Skater. Something about the way the friends mobbed everywhere together on their skateboards in Rocket Power made me want everything about it, then playing a skater with the world as their playground and an endless combination of possibilities—dreamy. Then the X Games began and I saw it all in real life, the excitement and adrenaline seeping from their pores, invigorating sounds—I couldn’t divert the eyes! I was hooked.
What do you love about it?
What’s not to love? Falling? To fall is part of it, part of the romance of how lovely it feels to land successfully. Skateboarding is an incredible thing. It warrants full concentration, pulling you away from the day’s mundane and propelling you into a world of focus, of determination, of internal dialogue on what’s next, of hope, of ambition, hard work, visualizing every move before carrying it out. Skateboarding forces the body and mind to work hand in hand to complete whatever you can dream up! It’s everything to me.
Favorite places to skate?
Venice Beach/Santa Monica. The energy is infectious there, especially sunrise when it’s calm but still full of so much character. It’s like a second home to me, although I’ve never lived there. Smooth concrete, breeze in my hair, legs pushing, pumping. Breathing, heart beating. Skateboarding was born by the beach, so it feels only right to be skating near it. With that being said, I am super excited to head to Barcelona, Spain, this summer to skate there. It’s what I imagine is going to be my absolutely favorite environment to skate, outside California.
Favorite skateboarders to watch?
Oh, gosh! OK, here we go: @Ariel_cai9233, @RachelleVinberg, @LizzieArmanto, @Skatemoss, @Notcheetos, @Brielsk8grl, @LilyStoephasius, @StellaReynolds_, @manu_nonno, @mamaskate, @allonsrider and the Kenworthy family. :) And some rad dudes: @AuthenticAndyAnderson, @Garretthill, @r.i1116, @ShaunHover, and @Rollersurfer. I chose this group of skaters for their sheer love of skateboarding, and unique voice within it.

Favorite skate move?
A lot of skateboarding you do with your legs, predominantly. My favorite tricks are the ones that go a little deeper—your arms, sides, shoulders are all directly involved. A Bertslide is definitely up there, a classic mood booster. I love to get low and hear my wheels scrape against the concrete, put as much energy into it as I can, send that full extension—you really feel the move throughout your whole body. And what it feels like is reminiscent of a surfer slashing a wave. Runner up would be the Boneless. Another one where you reach down to grab the board and use your legs and arms to launch yourself and your board into the air, like a flying karate kick, just just brace for landing and roll away stoked.
With skateboarding finally making its Olympic debut in Tokyo, what are you excited to see?
It’s so wild, isn’t it!! Skateboarding has come along way but to be featured on a global scale is incredible. It will create more opportunity for young skaters to follow a career path, and hopefully allow for more girls and kids to pick up a skateboard without feeling out of place. I’m excited to see the young skaters blow our minds with the technical skills to be world ranked at such young ages. Of course, I would have been floored to be there in person, but I’ll be watching it like a hawk from my tv. :)
For the first-time viewers, what should we look out for?
Look out for the next generation of skaters to come. And see the potential to skate how you want, watch and see how pro’ have uncanny finesse, passion, creativity. Be enamored by the drive, just like we watch all the other Olympic feats. Tricks happen in a flash, so if it’s your first time, watch closely and ENJOY!
