Artist Quentin JonesSometimes, you chart your path in life early on, discovering your North Star and chasing after it with every deliberate step. Other times, it's a bit looser—there's ambition and grit, but also a little kismet and a lot of letting things fall where they may. For artist Quentin Jones, it's the latter—she followed her curiosity and "opportunities that presented themselves over the years," she explains, "and it has evolved into what it is. "
"It" is a philosophy degree at Cambridge, an MA in illustration at Central St. Martins, a thriving career with clients including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, i-D, Chanel and Louis Vuitton and an oeuvre that mixes mediums—photography, illustration and animation—to coolly surreal affect. Just check out some of her wonderfully trippy work here. Off-duty, things are just as fun—equal parts yoga, dirty martinis and the rolling sea. Below, we step inside a day in that life…
My Hustle
Multimedia artist, working largely in film and photography and illustration
There wasn't really any rational, I just followed my curiosity and opportunities that presented themselves over the years and it has evolved into what it is.
Yoga, dirty martinis, and the sea
Imagine the outcome. If it is something I can clearly see, I know that it will work out.
I think this is universal, but trying again after the shame of failure.
How I Make It Happen
3 morning musts…
Coffee, peanut butter, toothpaste. In that order.
3 life hacks…
1. Cycling in the city—time to daydream, catch up on audiobooks and keep fit.
2. Hiding your phone when you need to focus—on kids, friends, work, whatever.
3. Planning weekends that allow for escapism. It's always a good idea to shake up the norm, escape domestic patterns, and return feeling grateful for your routine.
3 secret work weapons
Loud music, pig-headed determination and a thick skin.
Personal talisman…
My ring passed down from my mum, and her mum before.
Best advice received…
Don't allow yourself to get professionally comfortable.
My Style
Multiple ankle boots for winter, and as many chunky sandals for summer
My slip dress collection, which gets worn endlessly
Stop buying so much cheap stuff. You will not end up keeping any of it.
Elegant, but able to behave as badly as I like. All the Veronica Beard pieces I own are easy staples with fun twists.
My Recharge
Just finished reading The Paper Palace, which I loved. I've been listening to a lot of Charlotte Day Wilson, Sault and Jorja. Smith. I am HYPED for the new series of Succession to come out.
Keratin hair masks, toners with AHA, and thick balmy night creams
Cooking for friends and family
Spaghetti vongole, collaged paintings, mezcal negronis, and elaborate porridge breakfasts
