Back to School: Reneé Rouleau

September 5, 2017

Getting ready for back to school seasons goes far beyond updating your wardrobe, your skin deserves a refresh too! We asked facialist Reneé Rouleau (she gives Demi Lovato her glow) for her tips for reviving skin after a summer in the sun.

Sun, sand, sweat… the summer can take a toll on your skin. What are you tips for refreshing & revamping skin heading into the fall?

#1.
Give your skin an intensive boost of exfoliation with a 7-day exfoliating treatment. We know that exfoliation helps to improve all summer-related skin issues so everyone can benefit from this at-home treatment.

How to:
Once a day for seven days, use an at-home exfoliating peel like Triple Berry Smoothing Peelfollowed by a gentle exfoliating facial scrub, and then finish off with a soothing gel mask. The idea here is that by first using an acid exfoliator (glycolic, malic, tartaric, salicylic and lactic acids are great ones to use), you’re dissolving and loosening dead, damaged cells on the surface and giving some pore-clearing benefit. Leave on for 5-10 mins. Rinse well.

Next, now that the cells are loosened up, they can be lifted off using a gentle facial scrub. (Look for one with round, non-plastic beads so as not to scratch and irritate the skin.) Massage a facial scrub over the skin gently for 60 seconds, don’t apply much pressure and rinse well. The skin is now remarkably exfoliated and ready for the ultimate nourishment to the newly revealed cells.

Next up, apply a mask to the skin. I suggest using a gel mask as those are the most effective for delivering water to thirsty cells and can be used for all types of skin. (Two great gels masks are Rapid Response Detox Masque and Bio Calm Repair Masque.) Repeat this every day for one week and the result will be smoother, clearer, more even-toned skin with a radiant glow that lasts.

#2. Re-commit to your skin care routine. It’s a fact that people get much lazier in the summer with their routine so fall is a great time to recommit your skin and get into some new habits. One of the best ways to do this is to schedule a professional facial. Aside from giving your skin your skin an amazing treatment, you’ll also get a full assessment of your routine and how to best care for it. You know how when you go to the dentist and your teeth feel clean and your dentist reminds you to floss every day and you go home and are newly inspired again to your teeth care? That’s the same that most people get when they go to see a skincare professional or esthetician.

#3. Get back with using a product with retinol. Many people refrain from using a retinol product in the summer due to more time being spent outdoors and potential increased sensitivity. Fall is a great time to introduce the powerful skin-smoothing, sun spot-lightening effects of retinol. Start by using it twice a week and over the course of six weeks, add in an extra day every other week. The goal is to use it 4-5 times a week, depending on the formula. Advanced Resurfacing Serum can be well tolerated by even sensitive skin types when used five nights a week.

How should you adjust your routine as the seasons start to change?

Once the temperatures get cooler, there is less moisture in the air so the skin requires more hydration. What easily boosts essential skin hydration is by adding an alcohol-free toner (an often overlooked step) after cleansing into your skin regimen. The water and hydration a toner offersgoes to work quickly when followed by a serum and/or moisturizer. (Be sure to seal in hydration and active ingredients by leaving a toner damp.)

Lastly, switch to a heavier moisturizer to prevent moisture loss. Ifyou’re using a gel moisturizer, switch to a lotion. Your skin cells are like fish and need water to live sohydration is key for maximum skin health.
