Elise Peterson, Artist & Podcaster

The older generations may have suggested that you let go of your interests, hobbies, and passions once you become a mother—to focus completely and wholly on your children and assume just one identity: mom. Things are a little different today (and thank goodness for that). Because while being a mom is all-consuming—a blessing, a joy, and one of the hardest jobs in the world—it's also still you doing it. "You" is where it all starts, so don't forget about yourself.

Which brings us to one of the coolest moms we know: Elise Peterson. The artist, writer, and children's book illustrator is above all a storyteller, and with her podcast, COOL MOMS, she's created a space for mothers to talk about their interests—covering everything from self-care to spirituality, and why it's so important to prioritize your passions as a mom. Here, we chat with Elise on her interests, secret work weapons, and more—you'll see that she is, indeed, a very cool mom.

My Hustle

DEBUG: core/paragraph

My hustle…
I don’t align with the idea of hustling or a hustle. I do feel passionate about storytelling, and supporting others in realizing their own purpose through sharing the talents of myself and others in various mediums. I do that through my fine visual art practice, illustrating children’s books and, of course, with my podcast and community platform COOL MOMS.

What got me started…
My innate drive to be expressive has always pulled me to the arts.

What clears my head…
Time spent in nature

When in doubt, I…
I take a step back and tap into my spiritual compass.

3 morning musts…
I absolutely must pray, listen to music, and see the sun in the morning in order to get my day started in the most ideal way.

Life hack...
Don’t take anything personally.

3 secret work weapons...
I find that the same strengths that work well in life will work across the board: be a person of your word, manage expectations, and speak when you have something to say.

Personal talisman…
I’ll keep this one for me.

Best advice received…
Stay curious!

Wardrobe hack...
A great bag and a great shoe will elevate any outfit.

DEBUG: core/paragraph

My wardrobe MVP...
A crisp, white tank or easy, oversized button-down shirt.

What I would tell my younger self about getting dressed…
Wear what makes you feel good and not what’s expected of you.

Wearing Veronica Beard makes me feel…
Easy, light, and ultra-femme!

What I'm reading/listening to/binging…
I’m currently reading on and off Parable of the Sower

Beauty/self-care must-haves…
Lots of water, an abundance of tropical fruit, and some indica.

Favorite thing to do…
Laugh with the people I love

Favorite thing to make…
Time for those I love

One mover and shaker I admire…
Faith Ringgold for her limitless talent and practice in storytelling.
