Kristy Hurt, Founder of Kristy Hurt Consulting & the co-lab"I'm a people connector at heart"—that's Kristy Hurt talking, the independent executive recruiter and human resources consultant. She founded her consulting firm, Kristy Hurt Consulting, after spending more than a decade working for some of the biggest beauty, retail, and consumer luxury brands in the world, recruiting candidates best-suited for open positions and, in turn, helping those people land their dream jobs. And then there's The co-lab, Kristy's latest venture, a global, online networking community aimed at connecting industry professionals. People connector, indeed. Read on for how Kristy makes all this (and more) happen, from what clears her head to the best advice she's received.
My Hustle
I spent more than 5 years at the LVMH Group in NYC, where I held numerous HR roles supporting its many brands. After learning the HR business fundamentals, I left to follow my dreams and launched my own practice in 2008.
As a mom of 3 young kids, I wanted to be in control of my career and my life. I made that happen for myself at a young age. I'm a people connector at heart and I found the perfect career for me. Helping others with their careers gives me a lot of satisfaction.
Yoga and cooking. It feels great to focus on something other than the demands of work and family.
When in doubt, I...
Ask a few people I trust for their opinions and then I make a decision and move on. Not everything we tell ourselves is true. Be sure to examine whether fear is getting in the way.
Greatest challenge—and how I overcame it...
My twins (now starting high school) were born 9 weeks early, which was super scary! Find a community to support you in whatever it is you're going through. You are never alone. One day at a time.
how i make it happen
Coffee first, then plan my day and take a quick shower. Don’t get sidetracked by fires and emergencies and always prioritize fitness and healthy eating over everything else. The rest will fall into place.
Work from anywhere. Get 8 hours of sleep. Manifest the life you want and follow your dreams.
Creating the co-lab means I have a vast global professional network to lean on at all times, whether I need them or they need me.
The co-lab is publishing a book this fall with the best career advice from our members all over the world. I recommend finding your personal career idols, and studying their movements in order to create a rubric for your own success. Watching others and learning is key to moving forward with intention. There is always enough for everyone.
My Style
Put on a dress. It makes me feel put together and chic, and it's the most comfortable thing to wear, hands down.
Wardrobe MVP….
Anyone with the confidence to take fashion risks.
Buy less, invest in pieces you will treasure forever, care about the sustainability and transparency of the brands you buy from.
Wearing Veronica Beard makes me feel...
Polished, professional, and ready to tackle my day.
My Recharge
What I'm reading/listening to/binging...
The co-lab career stories podcast! We are telling all the career stories of the incredible professionals in the co-lab. I love listening to the real, inspiring career stories of our members.
Beauty/self-care must-haves...
Less is more. I have been buying from non-toxic beauty brands such as Beautycounter, Ilia, UpCircle, and Honey Girl Organics, to name a few.
Favorite thing to do...
Travel! I cannot wait to get on a plane again... Istanbul is high on the list to do. Favorites so far are Ponza, off the coast of Italy, and Morocco.
Favorite thing to make...
Fresh salads with ingredients from my farm share at Mama Farm and Early Girl Farm in Brookhaven, NY, where I have a summer and weekend cottage.
One mover and shaker I admire…
Political disruptor, US Representative and activist, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez inspires me. AOC came out of nowhere to become the youngest woman ever to serve in the US Congress and she works so hard every day to serve the people she represents. She also happens to look super chic while doing it.
