Mother's Day: Master Class

1. It’s all about a fresh, layered mix. For this luncheon, I started with a neutral gingham tablecloth and layered on vintage finds—such as my favorite white long-tailed peacocks, my cherished vintage lettuceware, bamboo cutlery, tulip glasses in pale sage—and new finds, such as rattan placemats and linen napkins in a pale coral. As for the finishing touches, I arranged fresh blooms mixed with herbs from our garden and included ceramic palm-tree candleholders with my favorite beeswax taper candles.

2. Incorporate the kids with a table-side game and an al fresco post-dinner movie on a projector in the garden. Plentiful pillows, cozy blankets and homemade popcorn are extra credit!

3. As the hostess, avoid the stresses of entertaining with an upbeat playlist, a specialty cocktail (or two!) and have your side dishes specially delivered in your own serveware.

Indoor vs. outdoor gatherings?
Outdoor! My husband runs our landscape and garden design division, and I invite any opportunity to celebrate our own lovely garden with a beautiful tablescape.

Most importantly, remember that time is precious. Savor all opportunities to celebrate over a home-cooked meal with family!
