July 11, 2016
Daisy Prince, editor of AVENUE magazine, is an expert when it comes to Newport, Rhode Island. Her family has been in the seaside city since the 1930s and she spent every summer growing up there. From where to stay to where to get the best lobster, here she is sharing her favorite spots!
Destination:
Newport, Rhode Island
Describe Newport in three words:
Old world perfection.
Best View of Newport:
I love the walking along the marina and looking out at all the ships in the harbor.
How to Get Around:
I live on my blue Beach Cruiser.
Hotel You Always Stay At: The Castle Hill Inn is a lovely spot but out of the town center, so anyone staying there would need a car. Best place to watch the sunset with a view to Newport Bridge.
EAT & DRINK
For a Morning Coffee: You can’t beat Belle's Cafe for breakfast in the Newport Shipyard.
For Cocktails: The Inn at Castlehill for views, the Candy Store for conversation and fun and O'Brien's Pub if you just want a beer.
Three Restaurants to Visit: Stone Acre Pantry on Thames, The Aquidneck Lobster Bar on Bannister’s Wharf and The Fifth Element on Broadway.
DO
Favorite Family Activity:Aside from making sand castles, I’d check out the aquarium on Easton’s Beach. It’s perfect for younger children.
Best Beach in Newport: Second Beach because it’s less crowded than First Beach and stretches out forever.
Best Place to Shop: Mandarine on Bannister’s Wharf. I make a twice yearly pilgrimage there.
Tourist Spot You Love: Taking a tour of any of the “summer cottages” it’s like a visit to America’s own Downton Abbey.
